Around 530 BCE Pythagoras formed a secret philosophical school devoted to, among other things, the belief that reality was governed by ratios of whole numbers. While on a ship, one of Pythagoras' followers showed him a square with unit side lengths. The diagonal measure of this square had a length that can be shown to be inexpressible in ratios of whole numbers. Pythagoras was so disgusted with this that he threw his student off the side of the boat to drown and swore the rest of the group to secrecy.
